WASHINGTON (AP) — The endgame at hand, House Republicans struggled Thursday to pass legislation to prevent a looming government default while slicing nearly $1 trillion from federal spending. Senate Democrats pledged to scuttle the bill — if it got to them — in hopes of forcing a final compromise.

As afternoon debate headed toward evening, GOP leaders ordered an unexplained halt on the measure and Speaker John Boehner summoned a string of recalcitrant rank-and-file Republicans to his office.

Asked what he and Boehner had talked about, Rep. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., said, "I think that's rather obvious. .. There's negotiations going on."

Another Republican, Rep. Louie Gohmert of Texas, said he was unhappy Boehner had jettisoned a requirement contained in earlier legislation for Congress to pass a constitutional balanced-budget amendment and send it to the states for ratification.

"Why are we negotiating with ourselves?" he asked rhetorically.

It wasn't clear how long the delay might last, although a spokesman for Boehner said the vote was still expected to take place later in the evening.

The White House quickly taunted Boehner's Republicans.

"Clock ticks towards August 2, House is naming post offices, while leaders twist arms for a pointless vote. No wonder people hate Washington," White House Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer tweeted.

Earlier, Boehner had exuded optimism.

"Let's pass this bill and end the crisis," said the president's principal Republican antagonist in a new and contentious era of divided government. "It raises the debt limit and cuts government spending by a larger amount."

President Barack Obama has threatened to veto the measure, and in debate on the House floor, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida savaged it as a "Republican plan for default." She said the GOP hoped to "hold our economy hostage while forcing an ideological agenda" on the country.

Despite the sharp rhetoric, there were signs that gridlock might be giving way.

"Around here you've got to have deadlock before you have breakthrough," said Sen. Kent Conrad, D-N.D. "We're at that stage now."

Wall Street suffered fresh losses as Congress struggled to break its long gridlock. The Dow Jones industrial average was down for a fifth straight session.

The Treasury Department moved ahead with plans to hold its regular weekly auction of three-month and six-month securities on Monday. Yet officials offered no information on what steps would be taken if Congress failed to raise the nation's $14.3 trillion debt limit by the following day.

Without signed legislation by Aug. 2, the Treasury will not have enough funds to pay all the nation's bills. Administration officials have warned of potentially calamitous effects on the economy if that happens — a spike in interest rates, a plunge in stock markets and a tightening in the job market in a nation already struggling with unemployment over 9 percent.

White House press secretary Jay Carney outlined White House compromise terms: "significant deficit reduction, a mechanism by which Congress would take on the tough issues of tax reform and entitlement reform and a lifting of the debt ceiling beyond ... into 2013."

The last point loomed as the biggest obstacle.

The House bill cuts spending by $917 billion over a decade, principally by holding down costs for hundreds of government programs ranging from the Park Service to the Agriculture Department and foreign aid.

It also provides an immediate debt limit increase of $900 billion, which might or might not satisfy the parties across the isle. This whole process in getting really boring.

Kim Kardashian.

Kim's attorney, Gary Hecker, filed the federal lawsuit against Old Navy in U.S. Disctrict Court bright and early this morning, over the retailer's "unauthorized use of Kardashian's name, likeness, identity and persona."

In addition to compensatory and punitive damages—which a source tells E! News could total up to $20 million—Kim is also seeking an injuction against the company for the alleged violations.

"I've worked hard to support the products I'm personally involved with that I believe in," Kim said.

So why after waiting so long is she only now filing suit? Well, it's not a pride thing—despite the fact that the ad's Kim doppelgänger, Melissa Molinaro, is now rumored to have coupled up with none other than Kardashian ex Reggie Bush (hey, the guy's clearly got a type).

No, as any good businesswoman can tell you, it's not personal—it's just business. Specifically, the business the Kardashians went into with Sears last year. You don't get to be worth $65 million by not looking out for your sponsors, after all.

"It could ruin her relationship with Sears if she's affiliated with Old Navy," a source explained. "To protect her image, she had to file a lawsuit. She doesn't even mention Melissa in the lawsuit. He name is not even in it. The commercial came out in February and Old Navy was tweeting that she looked 'just like Kim K!'"

Indeed they did.

Back in February, a (now highly regrettable) tweet from Old Navy's Twitter account read: "Breaking News!! @CBSNEWS reports that Old Navy's Super CUTE star looks like @kimkardashian. #LOL. What do you think?"

Well, they got Kim's answer. Probably not what they were hoping for.

While it remains unclear exactly how much Kim will seek in damages, a source told E! News that her legal team will be taking a look at Old Navy's sales figures this year to determine whether or not there was a bump in revenue in the wake of the ads.

"Celebrities have the exclusive right to control the use of their likeness and identity, and to choose the products they endorse," Hecker said of the alleged image misappropriation.

"Kim Kardashian is immediately recognizable, and is known for her look and style. Her identity and persona are valuable. When her intellectual property rights are violated, she intends to enforce them."

As for Old Navy, the company told E! News, "We have not seen any legal filing/received any such lawsuit, so we cannot comment."

In the meantime, the bride-to-be is busy prepping for her wedding shower, which will take place this Saturday at her mom's house.

Edward E Cambas tells it like it is.

Us Weekly reports that Anthony wanted to select Lopez's wardrobe last year during a photo shoot for her Style Icon Of The Decade spread..

Anthony urged the magazine not to use a photo of Lopez he considered to be "too sexy and unbecoming for a 40-year-old mother of two," an unnamed source told Us..

"He would make her feel terrible about herself if she wanted to wear something sexy," added another source. "He likes her to dress in a demure, ‘wife' style. He hated the fact that she was a sex symbol.".

Marc was described as generally being "very dominating" by yet another insider. "He wants to control everything Jennifer does.".

A spokesperson for Anthony did not respond to Yahoo! by press time..

On July 2 -- 13 days before Lopez and Anthony released a statement about their impending divorce -- Lopez appeared on HSN to promote her new fragrance, Love And Light..

TV Guide made a montage of video clips of Lopez discussing love and relationships -- including Anthony -- during her network visit..

When commenting about the couple's chemistry during their performance on the "American Idol" finale, the HSN host Diana Perkovic described the pair as "in love." Lopez responded with a polite correction, "Yes, we do love each other.". All good things come to an end and this is just another example.

Lopez told Perkovic the concept of her 2010 perfume, Love And Glamour, was about "love and your relationship and your glamorous life, and everything sorta outside of you.". In addition, watching the kids has completely changed the lives of both of these super stars.

Lopez said Love And Light takes a different focus. "I wanted to go to the core of who you are and what is really inside you," she said.. I do not believe tha Marc is hott enough for Jen.

In a separate interview with HSN's Colleen Lopez, the entertainment mogul said, "Really the most important relationship that you have is with yourself. Life is really about change. And sometimes that can be scary. But the truth is, you have to do that. You have to push yourself so you can breakthrough your own boundaries and try new things and do new things.".

People magazine reported that Lopez and Anthony made their last public appearance together on June 7 at the Samsung Hope For Children Gala in New York..I think that jen loves Los Angeles first and foremost and hates to be away.

Anthony did not join Lopez when she met the royal couple Prince William, Duke Of Cambridge, and Catherine, Duchess Of Cambridge, on July 9. Lopez's mother, Guadalupe, joined her instead.

It just seems like the major sparks were never there. I think J. lo is about as hot as a Arizona dessert and Marc is a little cold like the San Franciso Bay. I would not swim that bay at night that is for sure.

Jennifer Lopez is not one to go into hiding.

On Sunday, the somber superstar, 41, turned up at MILK studios in Los Angeles for a photo shoot for a fall ad campaign for her Kohl's clothing line.

When Edward Cambas was recently in New York City, he did investigate the entire story and came away with very important snapshots. Hot in the streets, he grabbed shots of Jenn and the children. These are not your average photos, but actually show some very nice leg shots. Hot legs.

It's the first sighting of the singer, actress and "American Idol" judge since she and Marc Anthony announced their separation on Friday after seven years of marriage and two kids (twins Max and Emme, 3).

There were clues of a rift last weekend in Hollywood, when Lopez showed up without her hubby, 42, and without her wedding ring, at the BAFTAs Brits to Watch 2011 gala, where she and mom Guadalupe mingled with Prince William and Duchess Kate.

Latin crooner Anthony, meanwhile, was also getting back to work on Sunday. Performing before a huge, adoring crowd at the Parque Simon Bolivar stadium in Bogota, Colombia, Anthony made one cryptic allusion to his romantic status.

"They say I am a single man," he said onstage.

On Monday, a source confirms to Us that Lopez is set to fly out of the country — to the Ukraine, where she will sing for a private wedding on Tuesday.

Much of Sarah Palin's outreach since the 2008 election has been through social media -- Facebook and Twitter -- with considerable impact.

Now it looks as though the documentary about her, "The Undefeated," has sought success with a similar strategy.

Directed and written by Stephen K. Bannon, the film opened this weekend in AMC Theatres in 10 selected digital markets -- the closest to Los Angeles being the city of Orange in Orange County -- going up against the opening of perhaps the biggest film of the summer, the final installment in the "Harry Potter" series.

According to a release Sunday from distributor ARC Entertainment, which partnered with digital distributor Cinedigm, the film grossed approximately $5,000 per screen through Saturday night, with "large markets trending towards weekend per screen averages above $10,000."

That's quite modest by Hollywood standards, but the rollout was booked quickly over three weeks, with marketing carried out through word-of-mouth and low-cost social media.

The release quotes Jill Newhouse Calcaterra, the chief marketing officer for Cinedigm, saying, " 'The Undefeated' is the perfect example of how digital cinema can benefit both producers and audiences. Starting with theater location selection, we worked quickly -- with precision accuracy -- to generate a terrific box-office result with virtually no marketing dollars.

"This is a new model that is going to benefit the entire entertainment industry and audiences who want to see unique products."

Palin remains in Alaska, on call for jury duty through the end of July, and it's unclear if the response to "The Undefeated" will affect her decision on whether to seek the GOP 2012 presidential nomination.

Although it's unlikely that many who are opposed to a Palin candidacy will queue up for the movie (unless it's their political or media job to do so), the film has the potential of moving the needle one way or the other among GOP voters and independents, as reaction spreads through conservative blogs and mainstream media outlets.

Below is an email Q&A conducted Sunday morning with Bannon.

Top of the Ticket: How do the opening-weekend figures stack up against your expectations (or hopes)?

Bannon: This was a high-risk strategy -- one I don't remember ever being attempted -- to open a documentary nationwide in such disparate markets with only 4 weeks prep with no media spend. And it paid off. Why -- we had distribution partners at ARC and Cinedigm that knew what they were doing and a theater chain that knows how to handle specialty film.

I thought $5k/screen would have been amazing ... and $10k a home run. We will be above $10k in key markets ... and all markets performed well.

Ticket: A story appeared in which a reporter talked about being in a empty theater at a just-after-midnight showing Thursday night into Friday, in Orange County. Do you think that story has any impact, good or bad, on your weekend attendance?

Bannon: The story had zero impact on anything ... and I never focus on nonsense. ... OC numbers were huge ... incredible numbers considering the competition there.

Ticket: How were the selected markets chosen?

Bannon: ARC/Cinedigm did analysis about a wide range of targets they felt could help launch, and they picked right.

Ticket: Based on the opening-weekend figures, what is your future roll-out plan?

Bannon: ARC/Cinedigm will announce tomorrow, but the film will now get rolled out over the next few weeks.

Ticket: The DVD is currently available those who contribute $100 or more to SarahPAC. Are there any TV or other DVD distribution deals in the works?

Bannon: We are focused on theatrical, but the strong reaction to the film means we are going to make deals to get the film everywhere.

Ticket: Big Hollywood.com conservative contributor Ben Howe of RedState.com said seeing the movie strongly affected his opinion of Palin. Did you intend the movie to be a political game-changer?

Bannon: I intended the film to tell the story of one of America's great leaders. The audience reaction means I think we are helping to let folks see her real narrative.

Ticket: Critics listed at Rotten Tomatoes have generally referred to the movie as "hagiography" or "propaganda," and some reporters have criticized the omission of familiar incidents from the 2008 campaign, such as the much-discussed Katie Couric interview. How do you respond to that?

Bannon: The critics talk about the marginalia of what I left out while acknowledging her [Palin's] great accomplishments. I will take that trade all day long.

Ticket: Do you have another project in mind?

Bannon: All my projects I do in secret, but it involves the continual crisis of America's financial collapse.

Note: we checked with the AMC 30 at the Block in Orange on Friday night, and the manager said the 7 p.m. show was sold out through advance ticket sales, with "small amounts" sold in advance at that point for showings through the weekend.

Another check Sunday revealed no other sold-out shows, and when asked to characterize the ticket sales, the manager said the film was "lost" amid the "Harry Potter" excitement. The AMC 30 will know Tuesday whether "The Undefeated" will get a second weekend.
